Recess privacy policy
By JARAMAH INC. Last updated November 4, 2026.
The short version
- Your classes, notes, files and recordings are kept on your device. Class recordings are turned into text on your iPhone.
- When you ask Recess a question or study out loud with Sunny, your question and the parts of your notes it needs are sent through our server to an AI company, and nothing is kept afterward.
- No ads, no tracking across apps, and we never sell your information.
What stays on your device
Your subjects, notes, PDFs, slides, photos of handouts, class recordings and transcripts, and your study plan. Scanned pages stay on your iPhone.
Recording a class
Recess records only after you tap Record, and turns the sound into text on your iPhone. Always follow your school's rules and ask your teacher before recording a class.
Your account
If you sign in, your email address is kept by our sign-in provider so you can use Recess on your other devices. You can delete your account by writing to us; in-app deletion will be added before launch.
What the AI receives
To answer from your material, quiz you or plan your sessions, the app sends your question and the matching parts of your notes, or what you said in Study with me (as text), through our server to the AI company. Answers show the page they came from. We ask the AI company not to store these requests, and they aren't used to train AI models. It may keep requests for up to 30 days to detect abuse, then deletes them. Our server keeps no copy; it keeps only daily request counts for an anonymous device ID, deleted after two days, to stop abuse and keep costs in check.
Students
Recess is for students 13 and older. For younger children, use Recess Kids with a parent.
